To enhance this service, a comprehensive school programme will be implemented at three primary schools situated in the disadvantaged communities in Mossel Bay. Currently 158 school learners benefit from the School Club; taking into consideration their home situations and general well-being. These children are selected in collaboration with the school management and the local Child Welfare Department, according to predetermined selection criteria. The School Club entitles the child to a daily nutritional lunch box at the school prepared by trained OVC female carers. The children also participate in a weekly After School Care Programme. The programme includes a cooked meal and refreshments, health checks, debriefing sessions, counselling, memory box activities, life orientation, HIV/AIDS empowerment and school support e.g. assistance with reading and other schoolwork, as well as lots of experiential learning, fun, sports activities and skills development. Their basic physical needs are addressed by the provision of clothing (school and home clothes) and school stationery. (In 2011 we supplied 91 children with full School Uniforms, shoes and Stationery.)
